After breakfast at the Kameha Grand Zurich, we checked out and took the tram to Zurich Airport. After checking in and passing through security and passport control, we went to the Swiss Senator Lounge to pass the remaining time before our flight. We then boarded a United 767-400 for the flight back to Dulles.
Zurich
After waking up at the Kameha Grand Zurich, we headed downstairs for the last breakfast of this trip. We had plenty of time as the hotel is very close to the airport.
After checking out, we took a tram from the Lindberghplatz stop to Zurich Airport, a trip that takes about seven minutes.
Inside the airport, we noticed a sign for the 2026 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship with the final game to be held here in Zurich.
We went into the terminal, checked in, passed through security, and exited Switzerland.
We headed right to the Swiss Senator Lounge. The lounge has a nice display on the wall that shows the coat of arms of each of the cantons as well as a depiction of various mountains and lakes. Here, at bottom center is the coat of arms of Grisons, the canton we visited yesterday for the first time.
We only had a few snacks as we were already very full from breakfast.
We saw our aircraft at the gate below the lounge. It was a lucky coincidence.
The weather wasn’t great with overcast skies and low clouds.
Soon, we headed down to the gate to board.
ZRH to IAD
We boarded just before 11am.
Goodbye Zurich!
We taxied past a four engined A340 at the gate, a rare aircraft these days that we likely will never fly on.
Lots of Swiss tails! And… Chair Airlines? Well, probably sort of a play on words with the “Ch” in the name being the same as Switzerland’s .ch TLD, which comes from the Latin name for Switzerland, Confoederatio Helvetica.
We were in the air a few minutes after noon.
And then we were in the clouds…
And above the clouds!

Dinner service on United is typically mediocre at best. The beef tends to be the most reliable. And of course the sundae is the best.
There was a glory visible just after lunch.
After watching a movie, sleeping, and watching a bit more, it was time for the pre-arrival meal.
There was snow on the ground as we flew over the northeastern US.
That’s the Delaware River below between New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The ski area that’s visible is Shawnee Mountain in the Poconos.
The prominent gap in the mountains is the Delaware Water Gap, where the river basically cuts through the line of mountains and changes course.
Still in Pennsylvania but approaching Maryland, we can see Three Mile Island.
As we cross into Maryland near Gettysburg, there’s not much but farms…
We were a bit surprised to see the surface of the Potomac frozen!
We flew past Dulles on our downwind leg.
The Washington Monument and US Capitol are clearly visible after we turned back towards Dulles.
Finally, we landed at Dulles, ending an excellent trip!
